Understanding Neck Pain

Neck pain can happen for various reasons. It might be due to poor posture, muscle strain, or, in some cases, something more serious like a herniated disc. In other cases, an underlying medical condition can also lead to neck pain. The neck is a complex part of our body, with bones, muscles, and nerves all working together. When something goes wrong in this delicate balance, it can result in pain and discomfort.

How Physical Therapy at Kinetix Physical Therapy Can Help

Physical therapy is all about using exercises and techniques to improve movement and reduce pain. Here’s how it can work wonders for your neck pain:

Targeted Exercises

Our experienced therapists are experts at designing exercises that specifically target the muscles and structures causing your neck pain. These exercises are tailored to your needs, ensuring they are effective and safe.

Posture Correction

Many of us have less-than-ideal posture, especially when working on computers or looking down at our phones. Our skilled physical therapists will teach you how to maintain good posture, reducing the strain on your neck muscles.

Hands-on Techniques

Your therapist may use hands-on techniques like soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, or gentle stretches to alleviate muscle tension and improve mobility in your neck joints.

Education and Self-Care

Understanding how to take care of your neck is essential. Your therapist will provide valuable insights on ergonomics, lifestyle changes, and self-care practices to manage and prevent future neck pain.

Diagnostic Testing

With the help of diagnostic testing, our board-certified therapists can uncover the root cause of neck pain and symptoms like weakness or tingling in your arms or legs.

Dry Needling

This treatment method is a highly effective technique that targets tight, painful muscles with thin, sterile needles to release trigger points. It helps reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow, decrease inflammation, and promote faster recovery. Many patients find that dry needling provides relief for chronic or stubborn neck pain that hasn’t responded to other treatments.

What to Expect During Physical Therapy

On your first visit, your physical therapist will conduct a thorough evaluation. They will ask about your medical history, assess your range of motion, and discuss your pain symptoms. Once they have a clear picture, they will create a personalized plan for your recovery. This plan will include specific exercises and techniques tailored to your condition. You’ll work closely with your therapist, who will monitor your progress and adjust as needed.

Here are some of the benefits you can expect from physical therapy for neck pain:

  • Pain Relief: The primary goal of physical therapy is to reduce your pain and discomfort. With targeted exercises and techniques, many people experience significant relief.
  • Improved Mobility: You’ll likely notice improved neck mobility as you progress through your therapy. This means you can turn your head more easily and without pain.
  • Better Quality of Life: Neck pain can limit your daily activities. Physical therapy can help you regain your ability to do things you love, like gardening, playing sports, or even just enjoying a pain-free night’s sleep.
  • Preventing Recurrence: Our physical therapists don’t just treat the symptoms; they also work on preventing future episodes of neck pain. By learning better habits and exercises, you can reduce the chances of neck pain returning.

Safe Holiday Lifting Tips

The holiday season is full of joy, but it also brings heavy boxes, gifts, and decorations; tasks that can put your back and joints at risk. Preventing injury starts with smart lifting habits.

First, always plan your lift. Know where you’re moving the item and clear any obstacles in your path. When picking up heavy boxes, bend at your knees, not your waist, keeping your back straight. Hold the object close to your body to reduce strain, and avoid twisting while lifting. If the item is too heavy or awkward, ask for help or use a dolly or cart.

During holiday decorating, be mindful of reaching and stretching overhead. Use a step stool rather than standing on unstable surfaces, and switch arms or positions frequently to avoid overuse injuries.

Finally, listen to your body. If you feel pain or fatigue, take breaks and stretch gently to loosen tight muscles. Incorporating core-strengthening exercises throughout the season can also help protect your back and improve stability.

Patient Success Story

My doctor referred me to Kinetix because I had lost mobility with my left shoulder and could no longer reach behind my back to fasten clothing. My supervising PT, Leanne, evaluated my range of motion and devised a plan of exercises and massage techniques to improve the range of motion. I was guided in stretching exercises by an intern, Ella and by Jazmin, my PTA, who had skillful massaging fingers to loosen knotted areas. After these sessions there was improved range of motion each time. As I prepared to graduate the program, my PT, Leanne showed my husband how to help with shoulder stretches at home. I am now able to reach behind my back fully and also safely carry my 10 month grand-baby. Hats off to Kinetix PT for excellent skills and the feeling of a supportive family from all the staff there. This includes Sierra who led the scheduling and check-in team. Now I continue to come for a Wellness exercise program with James every 2 weeks. -Polly M
